Jenny decided to use Eddie’s “head cage.” That’s a small square of fencing just big enough for Eddie’s head. He was already trained to put his head in this cage so they could examine him. Jenny would have to teach Eddie to keep his head in the cage long enough for her to give him his eye drops.

Jenny decided to use the pole and the word “Target.” She moved the pole so Eddie would tilt his head up. When he moved his head the right way, she gave him a treat. Next she showed him the eye dropper. She didn’t want him to be afraid of it. She drizzled water from the dropper into the cage. She did this for several days. Finally, after he was used to it, she squirted medicine into his eyes. He stayed still for it and kept his eyes open. He knew a big treat was coming. Sure enough, Jenny gave him one of his favorites—a tasty shrimp! It didn’t take long before Eddie took his eye drops every time.
